The name "Red Reishi Mushroom" is used for two species - Ganoderma lucidum and Ganoderma resinaceum - as opposed to "Black Reishi" - Ganoderma sinense.  This page is primarily about G. resinaceum.  However, Ganoderma lucidum is by far the more common and on this site we refer to it as just "Reishi."  To read about research on Ganoderma lucidum, click here.

Ganoderma resinaceum and Ganoderma lucidum are close relatives.  The two species contain very similar spectrums of compounds, and hence medicinal qualities.  As already mentioned, the names "Reishi," "Red Reishi," and "Lacquered Bracket" are used interchangeably between the two species.

One anatomical difference is that Ganoderma lucidum is usually described as having a stalk, while Ganoderma resinaceum is not.

The scant research conducted specifically on Red Reishi Mushroom extracted from Ganoderma resinaceum has shown it to have among the "highest antibacterial activity" of any medicinal mushroom tested, and "strong antioxidative effects." 700

A Nigerian study showed Red Reishi Mushroom extract to be "active against Pseudomonas syringae and Bacillus subtilis," two common bacteria. 701

Red Reishi Mushroom extract has also demonstrated general anti-tumor properties 702 as well as being an immunomodulator - meaning it may boost a weak immune system or calm an overactive one. 703

Paul Stamets lists Red Reishi Mushroom extract - in the form of his own proprietary formulation, which is what we sell - as decreasing levels of 5-alpha-reductase by over 75%.  Inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase is considered important to limiting prostate cancer growth.  Stamets also lists Red Reishi Mushroom extract as decreasing Aromatase by over 40%.  Aromatase is a breast cancer causative agent. 134
